The Greenwood Woodmen’s Varsity Football Team (11-2) saw their phenomenal season come to an end on Friday night, as they went down to the East Central Trojans (10-3) in the 4A Semi-State Finals. The defeat marks the end of an exceptional season for the program, one of its best in the past 25 years.
The Woodmen ended the game with a 13-point deficit, but the contest was more one-sided than the final score indicates. Greenwood was not able to get things going for much of the first half of the game, and they did not actually get on the board until the 4th quarter, after the Trojans had already built a sizable lead. East Central continued its offensive onslaught in the final quarter, and ended up winning handily, punching their ticket to the State Finals. The Trojans, who have faced their own playoff heartbreaks despite three straight 4A Semi-State appearances, will square off against the Lowell Red Devils next Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
For the Woodmen, this marks the end of a remarkable season, and proud effort by this senior-led team. The varsity squad put itself in position to make the school’s first appearance in the state finals, through a brilliant array of performances, which began back in August, and included only two losses. Indeed, the team rarely saw any games in which their opponents stayed within two touchdowns. The team’s feat of reaching the brink of the state finals is one that has only been matched a couple of times in the program’s history, and both of the previous trips (in 1988 and 1990) came over a quarter-century ago.
Even in loss, this Woodmen team has much to be proud of, and much to take with them. They have certainly inspired the Greenwood community with their spirited play, and point to a bright future for the program.
